What you Need to be Aware of Before Starting on eBay

So you've made a decision that you want to become an eBay seller. There are a few tips that you definitely need to know before you throw yourself in at the deep end.

What to Sell.

Starting off, you need to decide what it is you’re going to sell: what are you good at?. You’ll do much better on eBay if you become a great source for certain kinds of products, that way each time buyers are in need of those products, they'll know where to look. You won’t get any customer loyalty or true reputation if you just sell junk at random.

When you're trying to think about what to actually sell on ebay, there are a few things to consider. The most important of all is to always sell what you know. If you try to sell something that you have no knowledge about, then you’ll never be able to write a good and accurate description and sell it for a good price.

You might think "i'm not especially interested in anything", but if you take a close look at what kind of things you usually purchase and which websites you buy from, I’m sure you’ll discover something of interest to you. If all else fails try mentioning it to your friends and family: they’ll almost certainly say “Oh, well why don’t you sell…”, then you’ll slap your forehead "why not?"

Out of the things you have enough knowledge about, you should find out which of them, you could actually get for a low enough price to resell, and whether they would be suitable for posting. If you can think of something that you’re knowledgeable about and it’s small in size and the weight is light enough for postage to be cost effective, you might have a winner!

Don’t worry if you think what you’re selling is too obscure or too strange – it isn’t. There’s a market for virtually anything on eBay, even things that would only be able to sell once a year if you stocked them in a shop. You’ll probably do better on ebay if you cater to a niche market than if you sell something common.

Profit Margins

Your profit margin for what you sell on eBay is very important to your success. Always consider how much profit you can make selling a certain product. If that profit margin is thin, then reconsider your choices, and find a product with a better margin to sell. Your profit margin is the bottom line for your business, so think about this carefully. As a rule of thumb any successful business should have at least 20% return on investement.

Tax and Legal Matters.

pOnce you start earning enough money, you should realize that you’re going to have to start paying tax – this won’t be done for you. If you're going to sell on eBay on a full-time basis, you should really consider registering as a business.

Prepare Yourself.

There are going to be ups and downs when you sell on eBay, just like every other venture you start. Don’t throw in the towel, if something goes wrong in your first stages, the sellers who are successful on eBay are the ones who stick to it no matter what happens. They learn from the mistakes of the past, and pick up new disciplines for the future.

Anyone can make it on eBay, if they believe in themselves and follow the fundamentals – and if somehow you do decide it’s not for you, the very low start-up costs won't be much of a hurt.
